October is the planning sweet spot: cooler desert days, fall color in the East, and fewer summer crowds. The tradeoff is shorter daylight, colder nights, and first-snow risk in the high country.

For most travelers, October works best in Zion, Acadia, Great Smoky Mountains, Shenandoah, Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef. Pick desert parks for comfortable hiking, eastern parks for color, and canyon parks for cooler rim-to-river days.
What makes a park good in October
- Daytime hiking temperatures are more forgiving than summer.
- The main roads, shuttles, or trailheads usually remain usable.
- The park has a clear fall payoff: color, desert light, wildlife, or lower crowd pressure.

Planning notes
Pack for the overnight low, not the afternoon high
October can feel warm at lunch and cold at sunrise. Treat a warm layer, beanie, and rain shell as normal, even for desert parks.
Use daylight as a limiter
Fall trips need earlier starts and more conservative turnaround times, especially for canyon descents and ridge routes.
Book weekends like peak season
October is shoulder season in name only for famous foliage parks and Moab desert parks. Lodging and parking still reward early planning.
