Which packing cubes fit your bag?

How this works

The bag. Where a maker publishes interior dimensions (Away and Samsonite do), the tool uses them. Samsonite lists an interior depth equal to the outside depth, which cannot include the shell, so the tool subtracts 2 in from that one figure. Everywhere else the interior is an estimate: the maker's size minus an allowance for walls, frame, wheels, handle channels, and padding. For a wheeled case size (packing body only), that is 1.5 in off the length, 1 in off the width, and 1.5 in off the depth. For an outside size that includes wheels and handle, it is 3 in, 1 in, and 2 in. For a soft pack, it is 2 in, 2 in, and 2.5 in. These allowances are our own assumption, set at or beyond the gap Away and Samsonite publish between their outside and inside sizes, so the tool errs toward "tight". Every estimate is labeled on the result.

The cubes. Each cube and folder uses the maker's or listing's published size, packed full. Cubes lie flat and stack in layers along the bag's depth; a layer is as thick as its thickest cube. The checker places the largest pieces first and tries a second order, keeping whichever fits more. It does not count on cubes squashing to fit. Compression only changes the result where the maker publishes a compressed thickness (Eagle Creek). Eagle Creek folders publish a footprint and a volume but no thickness, so thickness is the volume divided by the footprint. Shonpy publishes the footprint only, so its thickness is not checked. A piece within 0.5 in of the limit is flagged as snug.

The pick. Sets that fit whole rank above sets that fit in part. For short trips the checker favors fewer, smaller pieces; for longer trips it favors more capacity while leaving room for shoes and toiletries. If you want compression, sets without a compression zip rank lower. If you fold, a folder that lies flat is added. Clamshell bags split their depth between two halves, and packs taper, so treat the layout as a starting point. Kit Authority has not measured these bags or cubes itself; see how we research and rate.
