How we research & rate
We’re upfront about how every recommendation is made. There are two kinds of picks on this site, and we label which is which on every card and at the top of every article.
Tested by Joel
Gear Joel has personally used in the field. These pieces carry a Tested by Joel badge, first-hand notes, and our own photos and footage. This is the curated, hands-on tier — smaller by design, because real testing takes time.
Researched
Most of our catalog. We do not claim to have physically tested these — and we never will pretend to. Instead we aggregate manufacturer specs, verified-owner reviews across retailers, expert publications, and community discussion into a single, transparent Kit Score. It’s honest research, clearly labeled as research.
The Kit Score
Every rated product gets a composite score from 0–10, computed from four weighted dimensions. The composite is derived from the breakdown by a formula — never hand-picked — so scores stay reproducible and comparable across the catalog.
Fit for purpose
30%How well it does the specific job people buy it for — the use-case fit that matters most for this category.
Owner sentiment

Affiliate links
Some links are affiliate links — if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes a score or a pick. See our full disclosure.
