Will a rower, bike, or walking pad fit your room?

Enter your floor, ceiling, and height. See which machines from our research fit with the room the makers say you need, and what rules the others out.

The footprint on the box is only the machine. You also need room to get on, to move, and to stay clear of walls, and the makers publish how much. This checker adds that clearance to every machine in our best rowing machines, best exercise bikes, and best walking pads guides and checks it against your space.

How this works

Footprints. Every machine size is the maker's published in-use footprint as listed in our guides. The checker tries each machine both ways round in your space, so a rower can run along either wall.

Rowing machines. Concept2's manual gives its 8 by 2 ft RowErg a 9 by 4 ft training area and an 11 by 6 ft free area. The free area is the target and the training area is the floor. Other rower makers in our guide do not publish an equivalent, so we apply Concept2's margins to their footprints; that is our assumption, not their guidance.

Exercise bikes. Peloton recommends at least 24 inches on all sides of its bikes and an 8 ft ceiling. Schwinn's IC4 manual asks for 24 inches along the access side and the rear. We use Peloton's figure as the target and Schwinn's as the minimum for every bike, and the ceiling rule for bikes you ride upright, not recumbents. Applying them beyond those brands is our assumption.

Walking pads. No walking pad maker in our guide publishes a US clearance rectangle, so we use Peloton's treadmill guidance: 78.7 inches behind and 20 inches on each side, and a ceiling from 7 ft (for walkers up to 5 ft 2 in) to 9 ft (for everyone). Pads sit lower than the Tread, so the ceiling rule is on the cautious side. Under a desk, the room behind you is what matters.

Your height and storage. Where a maker publishes a rider height range, the checker rules out machines you fall outside. If you put the machine away between workouts, bikes drop out (none of ours fold), and machines that stand upright are checked against your ceiling where the stored height is published. A stored size the maker does not publish is flagged rather than guessed.

This is general guidance. Follow your machine's own manual where it is stricter, and keep children and pets out of the clear area while you train.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do you need for a rowing machine?

More than the machine itself. Concept2 says its 8 by 2 ft RowErg needs a 9 by 4 ft training area and an 11 by 6 ft free area around it. Applying the same margins to the other rowers we cover, the most compact, the MERACH Q1S, still wants about 8 ft 5 in by 5 ft 7 in.

How much room does an exercise bike need?

Peloton recommends at least 24 inches clear on all sides of its bikes, and Schwinn's IC4 manual asks for 24 inches along the side you get on from and behind the bike. With 24 inches all round, the smallest bike we cover, the Marcy NS-1201U, needs about 6 ft 9 in by 5 ft 8 in. Recumbent bikes are the longest.

What ceiling height do you need for a spin bike?

Peloton recommends a 8 ft ceiling for its bikes so riders have headroom, which matters most when you stand to climb. Recumbent bikes, where you stay seated, only need to fit under the ceiling.

How much space do you need behind a walking pad?

A walking pad is a small treadmill, so plan for treadmill clearance: Peloton asks for 78.7 inches (about 6 ft 7 in) clear behind its Tread and 20 inches on each side. That means even the most compact pad we cover, the UREVO Smart Walking Pad, wants about 10 ft 1 in by 4 ft 11 in of clear floor. Under a desk, the space behind you is the part to keep free.

Which rowing machines fold or stand up for storage?

Of the rowers we cover, Concept2 RowErg, MERACH Q1S, WaterRower Walnut S4, Aviron Strong Series, NordicTrack RW900, Echelon Row-s, MERACH 950 fold, stand on end, or come apart; the Concept2 separates into two pieces rather than standing assembled. Stored sizes are only published for some of them, and the checker flags the ones that are not.
