About Kit Authority

Kit Authority covers gear for everything outside: camp, trail, travel, and training. We combine transparent product research with clearly labeled hands-on reviews, helping people choose the right kit without the guesswork.

How we work

Every pick is scored with the transparent Kit Score, a composite built from manufacturer specs, verified-owner reviews across retailers, and expert publications, weighted across four dimensions and computed by a formula rather than hand-picked. Most of our catalog is researched rather than personally tested, and we label it that way. When we have a product in hand, the review identifies the direct observations and original assets separately. The full method, including the dimensions and weights, is on how we research and rate.

Who is behind it

Kit Authority is founded and run by Joel Kelly, who owns its editorial direction and built the Kit Score method. Joel is a gear researcher and editor. Every roundup starts with manufacturer specifications, verified-owner reviews across retailers, and expert publications. Products received for direct use add firsthand setup and use observations without replacing that broader evidence. The byline on each article points back here so you always know who stands behind the recommendation.

Review samples

A supplied product can lead to dedicated hands-on coverage, original photography and video, and consideration in a relevant guide. Samples and affiliate relationships are disclosed, and neither can purchase a favorable conclusion, score, or ranking. Brands can read the full product review program.

How we make money

Some links are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes a score or a pick. See our full disclosure.

Our sibling site

Kit Authority covers broad outdoor, travel, and fitness gear. For loaded walking, pack-based training, and rucking-specific programming, we point readers to Ruck Authority, our sibling site dedicated to rucking. The sites stay separate so each can go deep on its own terrain while sharing the same research-first editorial standards.
