South Carolina outdoors
Blue Ridge foothills, an old-growth swamp, and barrier-island beaches, all inside a state you can cross in a half-day drive.
South Carolina packs three different outdoor worlds into one small state. Up in the northwest corner, the Blue Ridge foothills give you real mountains: Table Rock and Caesars Head State Parks anchor the Mountain Bridge Wilderness, with climbs to rocky summits, the 420-foot Raven Cliff Falls, and the 76-mile Foothills Trail linking it all together. Next door, the Jocassee Gorges and Lake Jocassee hide waterfalls you reach by boat and some of the most diverse hardwood forest in the country. Drop down to the middle of the state and you hit Congaree, where a boardwalk and a beginner-friendly canoe trail carry you through the largest stand of old-growth bottomland hardwood left in North America, home to some of the tallest trees in the eastern US. Then there is the coast: the Lowcountry, with Hunting Island's five miles of beach, maritime forest, and salt marsh, plus the tidal creeks and barrier islands around Charleston and Beaufort that are made for paddling.
Best windows are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November), when temperatures sit comfortable and the bugs back off. Summer is hot and sticky almost everywhere, with high temperatures in the 90s F and brutal humidity, so the swamp and the Lowcountry get buggy and the foothills become the cooler escape. Fall brings strong color to the mountains and the best paddling water levels in Congaree. Winters are mild, often in the 50s and 60s F, and great for hiking and quiet beach walks.
What to pack tracks the zone you pick. The foothills want real trail shoes, layers, and water for the climbs. Congaree and the Lowcountry demand serious bug protection from late spring through early fall, plus quick-dry clothes and sun cover for open marsh and beach. A dry bag and water shoes go a long way anywhere you paddle.

Getting around South Carolina
Most trips start from one of three airports. Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) is your gateway to the foothills, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Table Rock, Caesars Head, and Lake Jocassee. Columbia (CAE) sits closest to Congaree, about 30 minutes southeast of the park, and is also the rough geographic center of the state. Charleston (CHS) and the smaller coastal options put you in the Lowcountry, with Hunting Island about 1.5 hours south of Charleston near Beaufort.
You will want a car everywhere. The state is compact and easy to cross: Greenville to Charleston is around 3.5 hours, and Columbia sits roughly between the two as a natural pivot point. From the foothills, the mountain parks cluster within an hour of each other, so you can base in or near Greenville and day-trip the whole upcountry. Congaree is an easy half-day add-on from either Columbia or Charleston (about 1.5 to 2 hours from the coast). Along the coast, Charleston, Beaufort, and Hilton Head string out within a couple hours of one another, so a Lowcountry loop is simple to drive. Roads to the mountain trailheads and the Jocassee Gorges turn narrow and winding near the end, so leave a little extra time for the last stretch.
