How to choose a smokeless fire pit: size, steel, and ash

Most smokeless fire pits use the same double-wall principle, so the differences that matter are physical rather than technical. Four decisions cover almost all of it.

1. Size it to the group, not the garden

Diameter maps fairly directly to how many people can sit close enough to feel it.

The mistake is buying big. An oversized pit needs more wood to fill the bowl before it throws useful heat, and if people are not sitting close enough to feel it you have paid for fuel and got atmosphere.

2. Decide whether it moves

This is the single biggest split in the category and it drives everything else.

If it stays put, weight is an advantage and corten steel becomes an option. You can leave it out through winter and stop thinking about storage.

If it travels, every pound matters. Look for a carry case included rather than sold separately, and check the weight with the stand rather than the bare bowl. Anything over about 20 lb stops being a one-hand carry.

3. Stainless or corten steel

Stainless is lighter, arrives shiny, and discolours to a bronze patina after a few burns. That is normal and permanent. It resists corrosion well but most owners still store it under cover.

Corten is weathering steel. It forms a stable rust layer that protects the metal underneath rather than eating through it, which is why it is used for outdoor sculpture. It is heavier, more expensive, and it looks like rust, because it is. If you want a pit that lives outside permanently and you like the look, corten is built for it.

4. Check how the ash comes out

The most underrated feature in the category. A removable ash pan means you lift out a tray. No ash pan means tipping a large bowl of cold ash somewhere, which is awkward, messy, and the reason a lot of fire pits sit unused with last month's ash in them.

What matters less than you would think

Exact hole count and airflow design. All double-wall pits work on the same principle. Execution differs, and cheaper pits take longer to reach clean burn, but none of them are doing something fundamentally different.

Included accessories. Lids, covers, and stands are useful but easy to add later. Buy the right size and material first.

Fuel type claims. Multi-fuel usually means it will also take charcoal. Wood is what these are designed around.
