The Old Abe State Trail runs 20 miles of smooth paved asphalt on an abandoned railroad grade between Lake Wissota State Park and Brunet Island State Park, winding along the undeveloped shoreline of the Chippewa River in Chippewa County. The corridor is known for its abundant wildlife, riverside scenery, and access to two state parks at either end. Historical markers along the route tell the story of the region and its lumber heritage. A Wisconsin State Trail Pass is required for cyclists, skaters, and equestrians age 16 and older. The trail passes through the communities of Jim Falls and Cornell, providing mid-trail access points with parking.
Getting there
The southern trailhead is at Lake Wissota State Park near County Highway O north of Chippewa Falls. Mid-trail parking is available at County Highway S in Jim Falls. The northern trailhead is at Brunet Island State Park in Cornell, accessible from State Highway 64.
