Field briefing

Bandelier National Monument changes fast with season and elevation.

Before you go

Bandelier protects ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in Frijoles Canyon near Los Alamos, and the planning hook is the seasonal shuttle.

From spring through fall, a free shuttle runs from the White Rock Visitor Center into the canyon, and during peak hours you may be required to ride it when the canyon parking lots are full rather than drive yourself in. The entrance fee is $25 per vehicle. Build the day around the shuttle window, and bring sturdy footwear for the wooden ladders into the cavates.

Top things to do

  • Main Loop Trail

The signature walk past the Tyuonyi pueblo ruins and up wooden ladders into cliff cavates carved into the soft volcanic tuff.

  • Alcove House

A cliff dwelling reached by climbing about 140 feet up four wooden ladders to a large alcove with a reconstructed kiva. Not for those uneasy with heights.

  • Falls Trail

A longer canyon hike down Frijoles Creek toward the Rio Grande, with a waterfall view and a more rugged feel than the loop.

How long to spend

Anchor the day around Main Loop Trail

Put the access rule first: shuttle, parking, timed-entry, or reservation windows should decide the order of the day. For one day in Bandelier National Monument, make Main Loop Trail the non-negotiable, add Alcove House only if the first stop runs clean, and keep Falls Trail as the flexible finish.

  1. 1Start with Main Loop Trail: The signature walk past the Tyuonyi pueblo ruins and up wooden ladders into cliff cavates carved into the soft volcanic tuff.
  2. 2Add Alcove House: A cliff dwelling reached by climbing about 140 feet up four wooden ladders to a large alcove with a reconstructed kiva. Not for those uneasy with heights.
  3. 3Use Falls Trail as the optional finish, not as a reason to rush the whole day.

Where to stay

Juniper Campground, up on the mesa near the entrance, is the only camping inside the monument and is the practical base for an early start before the canyon fills. There is no lodging inside the monument. Los Alamos and White Rock are the closest towns for hotels and food, and Santa Fe, about an hour away, has the broadest lodging if you are touring the wider region.

Camping reservations

Camping reservations

Juniper Campground is mostly first come, first served, and the shuttle is the daytime access plan.

Bandelier has one campground, Juniper, on the mesa near the entrance. The bigger logistics piece is the seasonal shuttle into Frijoles Canyon, which you may have to ride when canyon parking is full.

  1. Arrival note

Bandelier sits southwest of Los Alamos, New Mexico, about an hour from Santa Fe.

  2. Shuttle access

The main entrance leads to the mesa and Juniper Campground, but the road down into Frijoles Canyon has limited parking, which is why the shuttle from the White Rock Visitor Center exists.

  3. Local movement

In peak season, plan to park at White Rock and ride in rather than fight for a canyon space.

Pair this with lodging: sleep where the park transfer is simple, especially if your route needs an early start.

Frequently asked questions

Is the shuttle required at Bandelier National Monument?

How hard is it to reach the cliff dwellings?
