Effigy Mounds protects more than 200 prehistoric mounds, including rare bird and bear shapes, on Mississippi River bluffs in northeast Iowa.

The fee is just $5 per vehicle from April to October and free in winter, and there are no reservations. The catch is that the mounds sit at the top of a real climb, so come prepared to hike. May to June and September to October are best, and the Marching Bear Group in the South Unit is the standout. There is no in-park lodging; base in nearby river towns.
