State Park · Maine
Maine's most visited state park beach: a sweeping arc of fine sand at the mouth of the Kennebec River, with dramatic tidal sandbars, a Civil War granite fort, and views of four offshore islands.

Field briefing
Popham Beach State Park changes fast with season and elevation.
Before you go
The single biggest planning variable is the tide. At low tide the beach roughly doubles in size, the sandbars become walkable, and the Fox Island tombolo emerges. At high tide the beach is still beautiful but compact. Download a tide chart before you go. No camping; treat this as a day trip from Bath or Brunswick, with Fort Popham as the logical add-on five minutes from the park entrance.
Weather, crowds, and what the season changes about the trip.
Cool and breezy; ocean temps in the 40s to low 50s F. The tidal sandbars are accessible at low tide and shorebirds begin moving through in May.
Pack Wind layer, waterproof footwear for wet sand and tidal areas, and a tide chart for sandbar access timing.
The park's peak season. Ocean temps reach the low 60s F by July, the sandbars are a draw for families, and the lot fills early on hot days. Arrive by 9 a.m. on summer weekends.
Pack Arrive early, bring food since there are no concessions, and pack a tide chart because the beach experience changes dramatically from high to low tide.
The beach empties dramatically after Labor Day but remains beautiful through October. Low-angle light, cold ocean air, and long empty sandbars make fall the best photographic season.
Pack Layers for the exposed beach, binoculars for fall shorebird migration on the sandbars, and waterproof footwear for tidal areas.
Exposed and cold at the Kennebec mouth; winter storms can wash across the beach. The park is open but the lot is often unplowed and access can be difficult.
Pack Heavy insulation, wind protection, and a check on road and parking conditions before making the trip.
Popham Beach tidal sandbars at low tide
At low tide, the beach extends dramatically offshore with sandbars that can be walked for up to a mile from the dune line. The tidal patterns at the Kennebec mouth create a constantly changing beach landscape. Watch tides carefully; sandbars flood quickly.
Fox Island tombolo walk
At low tide, a sand causeway (tombolo) connects to Fox Island, a small rocky island topped with beach roses and sea grass. The walk takes about 10 to 15 minutes each way when the tombolo is exposed. Return before the tide turns.
Fort Popham historic site
Just outside the park entrance, Fort Popham is a remarkably intact Civil War-era granite fortification built between 1861 and 1869 to protect the Kennebec River approach to Bath. Never completed and never saw military action; free to visit separately from the state park.
Surf fishing the Kennebec mouth
The confluence of the Kennebec River and the open Atlantic creates productive surf fishing for striped bass and bluefish in season, with the beach's exposed position at the river mouth providing access to migratory fish moving up the coast.
Put the access rule first: shuttle, parking, timed-entry, or reservation windows should decide the order of the day. For one day in Popham Beach State Park, make Popham Beach tidal sandbars at low tide the non-negotiable, add Fox Island tombolo walk only if the first stop runs clean, and keep Fort Popham historic site as the flexible finish.
Turn Popham Beach's conditions into water, pack, and sleep-system decisions.

Getting there
Arrival note
Popham Beach State Park is at 10 Perkins Farm Lane in Phippsburg, Maine, at the southern tip of the Phippsburg Peninsula.
Car strategy
From Bath, follow Route 209 south about 14 miles to the park entrance.
Local movement
From I-295, take the Brunswick exit and follow Route 1 to Bath, then Route 209 south.
Pair this with lodging: the closest bed is not always the simplest one if road time, road quality, or fuel stops dominate.
Before 9 a.m. on hot summer weekends and holidays. The lot fills quickly and when it reaches capacity, cars are turned away. The park does not have an advance parking reservation system.
Yes, at low tide when the sand tombolo is exposed, the walk to Fox Island takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Pay close attention to tides because the tombolo floods quickly and the Morse River current at the south end of the beach can be strong.
No. Fort Popham is a separate historic site about a quarter-mile north of the park entrance, managed by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and free to visit. It is a natural add-on to a Popham Beach day trip.
No. The park is day-use only. For camping near Phippsburg, Hermit Island Campground is a short drive away. For Maine state-park camping, Sebago Lake State Park to the west and Lake St. George State Park to the north are the nearest reservable options through campwithme.com.
