Field briefing

Lake Mead National Recreation Area starts with access, not mileage.

Before you go

Lake Mead is the easiest big-water boating trip from Las Vegas, and the planning question is usually how you get on the water: a rented houseboat from a marina, a powerboat or kayak you launch yourself, or an outfitter-run float through Black Canyon below Hoover Dam.

Off the water, treat summer as dangerous heat and save real hiking for the cooler months. Campgrounds and marinas are spread around a very large shoreline, so pick your end of the lake before you book.

Where to stay

Boulder Beach near Boulder City is the closest developed area to Las Vegas, with a campground and easy access. Callville Bay and Temple Bar are full marinas with houseboats, campgrounds, and lodging. Echo Bay and Las Vegas Bay round out the Nevada side, and Katherine Landing anchors the far south near the Colorado River. Boulder City and Las Vegas have the broadest hotel inventory. Choose a marina end first, because the lake is too big to treat as one place.

Camping reservations

Camping reservations

Marina houseboats book through the concessioners; the lakeside campgrounds book on Recreation.gov.

Lake Mead has roughly 900 campsites across many developed campgrounds plus marina concessions. Houseboats are reserved through the marina operators at Callville Bay and Temple Bar, while most NPS campgrounds are reservable on Recreation.gov.

Reviewed June 11, 2026

Booking window

Developed campground reservations are made on Recreation.gov, where cash is not accepted. Houseboats book ahead through the marina concessioners; summer dates go early.

  • The $25 vehicle entrance fee is separate from camping and vessel fees and can be paid on Recreation.gov or at an entrance station.
  • Houseboat rentals are concessioner-run out of Callville Bay and Temple Bar, not on Recreation.gov.
  • The lake is enormous; campgrounds at opposite ends are an hour or more apart, so match your campground to your launch area.
  • Summer heat is a genuine hazard for shoreline activity even when campsites are available.

Access rhythm
Transfer time matters
Region
Nevada
  1. Car strategy

The main entrance at Boulder Beach is about 45 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip through Boulder City.

  2. Access note

Other marinas and campgrounds are spread around the shoreline and can be an hour or more apart, so plan your route to a specific marina rather than to the lake in general.

  3. Transfer plan

A vehicle is essential, and a boat or an outfitter is what turns it into a water trip.

Pair this with lodging: the best base is the one that protects the departure window, pickup point, or weather buffer.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the entrance fee at Lake Mead?

The NPS lists $25 per private vehicle, valid for 7 days. Vessel fees are charged separately, and the entrance fee can be paid on Recreation.gov or at an entrance station, where cash is not accepted for camping.

Where do you rent a houseboat on Lake Mead?

Houseboats are rented through the marina concessioners, most notably Callville Bay about an hour from Las Vegas, and Temple Bar on the Arizona side. Reserve ahead through the marina operators rather than Recreation.gov.

Can you visit Lake Mead in summer?

Yes for boating, but summer highs reach 100-110F, so shoreline hiking is a dawn-only activity and heat is a real hazard. Spring and fall are far more comfortable for land-based time.

How do you paddle the Black Canyon below Hoover Dam?

The Black Canyon Water Trail runs on the Colorado River below the dam and requires a launch permit; most paddlers go through an authorized outfitter that arranges the permit and shuttle.
