Field briefing

Colorado National Monument changes fast with season and elevation.

Before you go

Colorado National Monument is a compact red-rock park right above Grand Junction, and the centerpiece is Rim Rock Drive, a 23-mile cliff-edge road with tunnels and overlooks.

The entrance fee is $25 per vehicle, and the drive is open year-round, which makes this an easy stop on an I-70 trip. There are no reservations to manage, so the planning move is simply timing: hike in spring or fall to dodge the summer heat, and the only campground, Saddlehorn, is mostly first come, first served.

Top things to do

  • Rim Rock Drive

The 23-mile paved road between the Fruita and Grand Junction entrances, with tunnels and overlooks above the canyons and spires. The signature experience.

  • Monument Canyon Trail

A descent into the canyon past Independence Monument, the Kissing Couple, and other major formations, then back up the same way or as a shuttle.

  • Canyon Rim and Window Rock trails

Easy rim walks from near the visitor center with big canyon views for minimal effort, good for sunset.

How long to spend

Anchor the day around Rim Rock Drive

Put the access rule first: shuttle, parking, timed-entry, or reservation windows should decide the order of the day. For one day in Colorado National Monument, make Rim Rock Drive the non-negotiable, add Monument Canyon Trail only if the first stop runs clean, and keep Canyon Rim and Window Rock trails as the flexible finish.

  1. 1Start with Rim Rock Drive: The 23-mile paved road between the Fruita and Grand Junction entrances, with tunnels and overlooks above the canyons and spires. The signature experience.
  2. 2Add Monument Canyon Trail: A descent into the canyon past Independence Monument, the Kissing Couple, and other major formations, then back up the same way or as a shuttle.

Where to stay

Saddlehorn Campground, near the visitor center, is the only camping inside the monument and the best base for sunrise and sunset on the rim. There is no lodging inside the monument. Fruita, just below the west entrance, and Grand Junction, below the east entrance, have the closest lodging, food, and services. Most visitors base in one of those two towns and drive up for the day or to camp.

Camping reservations
